The Haunted History of Wilmington
It’s been said that Wilmington is one of the most haunted cities in the country. It could be because of the old architecture, as parts of the area still have buildings and structures built over 300 years ago. It could also be the rich history of the city– tainted with war, slavery and shady characters. Or, it could simply be fun stories people tell to keep things interesting. Wilmington hosts ghost tours and haunted crawls throughout the whole year, but when spooky season starts, these activities become even more popular. Let’s take a look at some of Wilmington’s most paranormal activities…
THE GHOST WALK OF OLD WILMINGTON
When- Every night until October 31- 6:30pm & 8:30pm
Cost- $17+tax for adults (with some discounts for student, military and seniors)
Let’s start off extra spooky. Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington is one of the most popular ghost tours in the area and has earned the title of one of the Top 5 Ghost Walks in the Country by USA Today. The walk has been featured on haunted TV shows and continues to impress those who come for a scare. Throughout this 90-minute tour, you’ll venture through dark alleyways, explore graveyards and enter into some of the most haunted old homes in the area. People who have been brave enough to take this tour have taken unexplainable photos and felt eerie auras throughout their experience. Two tours are never the same and the metaphysical moments may stay with you forever. If you’re in for a scare, this one’s for you!
HAUNTED PUB CRAWL
When: Wednesday- Saturday, 7:30pm
Cost: $22.50 + tax (drinks not included)
Owned by the same folks as the Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington, Haunted Pub Crawl is a slightly less spooky experience than its sister tour, but with a twist. This two-and-a-half-hour experience will help you take the edge off all the scary stuff, making stops at all the best haunted bars in town. You’ll learn about Wilmington’s history while sipping on beers with buddies and enjoying spirits with the spirits. The tour takes you to four bars in the areas (where you can grab a drink, but you don’t have to) and your tour guide will tell you a chilling tale about the location. If you like brews and boos, this one’s for you!
PARANORMAL GHOST TOURS
When: October Fridays at 7pm & 9pm
Cost: $25 +tax
The Poplar Grove Plantation is full of history, owned by and passed down to five generations of the Foy family. The 90-minute Paranormal Ghost Tour hosted here encourages you to take photos of the home, bring paranormal equipment and download Ghost apps to fully immerse yourself in the experience. This is an exclusive experience, as it is only offered four times a year with 16 tickets per tour. Hop on this one fast! If you can’t make it this tour, consider checking out their plantation tours, offered throughout the year.
