Golf Courses in New Hanover & Brunswick Counties

People travel from all over the country to golf on North Carolina’s famous fairways. New Hanover and Brunswick counties are home to some of the most luscious greens in the state– including some of the most famous in North Carolina!  These coastal courses are on par (no pun intended!) with some of the best in the world. So whether you’re planning on getting in a round of golf during your vacation or retiring here to perfect your swing, here’s a list of some of the best golf courses in the Greater Wilmington area that are calling your name … it’s tee time!

  1. Cape Fear National at Brunswick Forest (https://www.capefearcountryclub.net/

Founded in 1896, Cape Fear is one of oldest golf courses in New Hanover County as well as the oldest private country club in the entire state! Interestingly enough, it was recently in scenes from the Amazon show, “The Summer I Turned Pretty.”  In addition to doubling as a movie set, the Donald Ross golf course boasts 18 holes with over 6,856 yards with a par of 72. This golf club is only open to Cape Fear Country Club members, though, so if you want to partake in a round of golf, you’ll have to join.

  1. Carolina National Golf Club (https://carolinanationalgolfclub.com/

The Carolina National Golf Club is located between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington and offers over 100 acres of environmentally friendly wetlands. The club has 27 holes, comprising three nine-hole courses named after birds local to the area– the Egret, Heron, and Ibis, each with a par 36. Golf Digest even recognized this course as “one of the finest courses on the eastern seaboard!”

  1. Wilmington Municipal Golf Course (https://www.wilmingtonnc.gov/departments/parks-recreation/golf/wilmington-municipal-golf-course

The Wilmington Municipal Golf Course was designed in 1926 by Donald Ross (the same designer as Cape Fear!) to create a championship 18-hole course for the public. It had a facelift in 2014 as part of a $1.5mil renovation project, upgrading its bunkers and golf cart paths among a list of other refurbishments. Residents of New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties receive a local resident rate!

  1. Porter’s Neck Country Club  (https://www.portersneckcountryclub.com/golf

Historically, this course has been named “Number One Coastal Course” by Golf Digest, so it’s a must-do for golfers in the area! The private Tom Fazio 72-Par course is home to 7100 yards of well-manicured greens, as well as a ton of amenities for its country club members. Within their premier course, they also offer a driving range and a short-game practice area. The club is member-owned but also open to the public.

In addition to providing superb golfing environments, North Carolina is also known for being a prime retirement location (probably because of all the golf!) Brunswick Forest, for example, is touted as Coastal North Carolina’s #1 adult active community, with Cape Fear right in its backyard. Compass Pointe (which you can read more about in my blog post here: https://saltyairliving.com/blog/communities-that-have-it-all) is a gated golf resort and retirement community full of high-end amenities.

Even if you’re not planning on retiring anytime soon and simply want to move down to the North Carolina Coast for its relaxed lifestyle, beaches, and choice of fairways, I can help you find the home of your dreams! Contact me at [email protected] or via phone at (910) 523-1018 And I may even treat you to a round of golf! Until then, I hope you have a tee-riffic day! 😉
